Structure Fire at 49625 Hampshire rocks road

Big bend, CA, February 22, 2008:  Three fire engines and an ambulance from Truckee Fire responded along with one CAL FIRE engine and one CAL FIRE Battalion Chief to a fully involved structure fire at 49625 Hampshire Rocks Road, at Big Bend.  The unoccupied residence sat 150’ off the roadway and Cal Trans assisted by clearing snow from the driveway to give fire apparatus better access.  Fire damage was restricted to the single-family residence.  No adjacent properties were damaged. 

 

The fire originated at a propane line on the outside of the building.  It appears that the line was damaged by snow migration off of the roof applying lateral pressure against the propane line.  The propane escaping through the damaged line found an ignition source at the building, ignited, and continued to feed the fire until the propane tank could be found, dug out and shut off.

Although the part time residence appears to be a total loss there were no deaths or injuries attributed to the fire.  The dollar loss of the building and its contents is estimated to be in excess of $500,000.
